As Australia’s only specialist eye, ear, nose and throat hospital, the Eye and Ear has been providing care for the senses for over 160 years. The Eye and Ear has almost 90 different outpatient clinics for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of vision and hearing loss and provides a 24-hour emergency eye and ear, nose and throat service. 

Every year the Eye and Ear cares for nearly 200,000 patients, with over 136,000 outpatients, over 42,000 emergency patients and over 14,000 inpatients. The hospital recently completed a major redevelopment to create a modern internal structure and to improve access for patients, visitors and staff.

About the Position

12 months Fixed Term Fulltime position - commencing February 2026 

This position requires personal leadership qualities from an Advanced Trainee in ophthalmology with an interest in combining a clinical role with a liaison role for junior medical staff in their education and training requirements.  The Chief Registrar works closely with the Director of Clinical Training in the preparation and delivery of the microsurgical training program for RANZCO trainees in the Victorian network.

Opportunities are offered to gain supervision and training with complex cataract cases and advanced techniques in cataract surgery, attend subspecialty clinics of interest, and attend many of the education and training opportunities offered at the Eye and Ear. You will also attend the Acute Ophthalmology Service (AOS) and Surgical Ophthalmology Service (SOS) outpatient clinics and Emergency Department which includes some evenings and weekends.

 

This is an excellent opportunity to further develop required RANZCO competencies particularly in the domains of Communicator, Manager and Scholar.

 

The successful applicant will be a RANZCO Advanced Trainee, have completed at least 4 years registrar training prior to commencing this role, and preferably have successfully completed the RACE.

 

Salary and conditions of employment will be in accordance with the Australian Medical Association (Victoria) Doctors-in-Training Agreement 2022 - 2026.
