As Australia’s only specialist eye, ear, nose and throat hospital, the Eye and Ear has been providing care for the senses for over 160 years. The Eye and Ear has almost 90 different outpatient clinics for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of vision and hearing loss and provides a 24-hour emergency eye and ear, nose and throat service.
Every year the Eye and Ear cares for nearly 200,000 patients, with over 136,000 outpatients, over 42,000 emergency patients and over 14,000 inpatients. The hospital recently completed a major redevelopment to create a modern internal structure and to improve access for patients, visitors and staff.

Hospital Medical Officer (ENT / Ophthalmology)
Full Time positions commencing February 2025
(12 month period)
About the Role
The HMO will cover both the wards and Emergency Department on a rotational basis. Ward HMOs participate in daily ward rounds and work closely with the unit Registrars and Fellows. He/she is also responsible for ensuring discharge summaries and other documentation are completed allowing for timely discharge. Provision may also be made to attend ENT and Ophthalmology outpatient clinics. HMOs are rostered to work weekdays, evenings and weekends on the wards, in the Emergency Department and in clinics. HMOs are also rostered to night shifts primarily in the Emergency Department (supervised by accredited registrars).
PLEASE NOTE BEFORE APPLYING: It is important that applicants have an interest in learning and developing skills in ophthalmology and ENT. Our HMOs spend extensive time on the wards and peri operative care, and many of our patients are elderly with medical comorbidities. Therefore, it is important to have a strong general medicine and acute medicine background. This previous experience is critical, coupled with a desire to learn ophthalmology and ENT.
