As Australia’s only specialist eye, ear, nose and throat hospital, the Eye and Ear has been providing care for the senses for over 160 years. The Eye and Ear has almost 90 different outpatient clinics for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of vision and hearing loss and provides a 24-hour emergency eye and ear, nose and throat service.
Every year the Eye and Ear cares for nearly 200,000 patients, with over 136,000 outpatients, over 42,000 emergency patients and over 14,000 inpatients. The hospital recently completed a major redevelopment to create a modern internal structure and to improve access for patients, visitors and staff.

About the Role
Unaccredited Ophthalmology Registrar
Fulltime Fixed Term commencing February 2026
A unique opportunity to join the JMS ophthalmology team at the Eye and Ear Hospital in East Melbourne, commencing February 2026 for a 12-month period.
With the support of our senior medical staff and, you will become proficient in full ophthalmic clinical assessments and able to initiate management of acute eye conditions.
The registrar will work predominantly in our specialised emergency department, including night cover. You will develop an initial level of competence in managing acute eye conditions through exposure to our emergency department and the various general and specialty clinics. You may also be on call overnight and weekends as rostered (answerable to a consultant or fellow).
Considering your training, experience and progression, you may advance to performing minor procedures.
We strongly support education for all our staff and expect you to participate where possible in our excellent teaching program and to seek out other learning opportunities.
A critical factor in our research success is the strength of the relationships we have with partners such as University of Melbourne Department of Ophthalmology and, Centre for Eye Research Australia, and the Bionics Institute.
Salary and conditions of employment will be in accordance with the Doctors in Training (Victorian Public Health Sector) (AMA Victoria/ASMOF) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2022-2026.
