As Australia’s only specialist eye, ear, nose and throat hospital, the Eye and Ear has been providing care for the senses for over 160 years. The Eye and Ear has almost 90 different outpatient clinics for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of vision and hearing loss and provides a 24-hour emergency eye and ear, nose and throat service.  

Every year the Eye and Ear cares for nearly 200,000 patients, with over 136,000 outpatients, over 42,000 emergency patients and over 14,000 inpatients. The hospital recently completed a major redevelopment to create a modern internal structure and to improve access for patients, visitors and staff.

About the Role 

Fulltime Fixed Term- commencing February 2027

Senior Registrar/ Medical Officer in Ophthalmology

The Senior Registrar /Medical Officer (previously known as General Ophthalmology Fellows) will provide an in-hours and out-of-hours service to the hospital in general and specialist ophthalmology. In addition, the Senior Registrar is expected to do some night shifts. They are often the most senior clinician in Emergency Department and will be involved in complicated cases and supervision and teaching junior registrars.

Senior Registrars will undertake unsupervised cataract surgery depending on experience. Also, if not already, the Senior Registrar will become credentialed with laser retinopexies, peripheral iridotomies and tap and inject for endophthalmitis. 

Successful applicants have usually completed at least 4 years of specialist ophthalmology training prior to commencing a Medical Officer role.

Salary and conditions of employment will be in accordance with the Australian Medical Association (Victoria) Doctors-in-Training Agreement 2022-2026.
